Friends have been telling us for years how much fun they have camping at the Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains resort in Granby (formerly River Run Resort). One family we know and love has been going for the past five years or so, taking pictures outside of the General Store each summer as their kids grow. When we bought our camper last winter, it was the very first reservation we made and have been looking forward to it since!
We took advice to splurge a bit a reserve a golf cart, as the resort it pretty big. With four kids in tow, it not only helped us get from place to place, but was one of their favorite things about the weekend! Advice: if you plan a visit with older kids, or adults only, you would be just fine riding bikes or even walking to where you need to go, but a golf cart was very handy to transport a cooler and beach towels!
Our pull-through RV site was immaculate and had full hook-ups (sewer, water, and electricity). We also saw tent sites, beautiful lakefront cabins, a rentable Airstream section, and old-fashioned covered wagons for rent that were designed for camping. How fun is that?
Within half an hour of pulling in we were set up and ready to explore the amenities, and oh, what amenities we found! Here is what we happened upon for free:
- Pool & hot tubs
- Live music
- Sports complex & playground, complete with a huge inflatable bounce pad
- Bocce ball
- Putting Green
- Dog park
For a reasonable cost, there is also a mini bowling alley, kayaking, an arcade, and gem mining. Their sports bar, Summit Bar & Grill, was much less costly than we had expected and served great nachos. If you like tropical drinks, they offer one called the Toasted Coconut that I reminisced about for days!
Our family chose to go mini bowling and visit the arcade for evening fun. Five of us bowled an entire game for $15 and had a blast challenging each other to basketball shootouts, skee-ball, and air hockey afterward. We ended the evening back at our site grilling hamburgers and making s'mores over the fire.
The next day, we spent most of our time at the pool. The temperature was only in the mid-70s, but the water was heated to where it felt wonderful! The pool is large and has a section for smaller kids- I'd guess approximately 12" deep- which we appreciated for our two younger children.
Everyone needed hot showers after a day at the pool, and the campground has a nice shower/ restroom facility. We all slept so well after a gorgeous weekend full of sunshine and making memories!
The entire area between Winter Park and Grand Lake is quite charming, in my opinion, and has been one of our favorite weekend getaway destinations for years. Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains fits right into that narrative.
A few of our other favorite activities in that area:
- Fraser- High County Stampede Rodeo
- Grand Lake- grabbing ice cream at Miyauchi Snack Bar and then playing at the beach across the street. Feeling more adventurous? You can rent a paddle boat or pontune for some fun on the water!
- Winter Park- the resort is one of our favorites for family fun. The alpine slide is a blast and they host a number of festivals during the summer.
- Lots of great hiking trails around as well (see a list of some of the best from AllTrails HERE). When you have some tiny legs out with you, the Cranmer Loop trail at Snow Mountain Ranch is a good one.
